First Time in Vietnam: A Muslim Traveller's Guide

How to plan a halal-friendly trip across Vietnam — visas, prayer rooms, restaurants, and the small things that make the difference.

Vietnam is one of the most welcoming countries in Southeast Asia, and the halal-friendly infrastructure has improved dramatically in the last few years. Here's what we learned on our first three-week trip.

Before you fly

  • Most ASEAN passports get visa-free entry; check the official immigration site for current days allowed
  • Download an offline map and a translation app — Google Translate's camera mode is invaluable
  • Carry a small printed list of foods you can and cannot eat

Where to find halal food

Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Nha Trang all have certified halal restaurants. In smaller cities, vegetarian Buddhist restaurants are a reliable backup, and most hotels can prepare seafood meals on request.

Prayer arrangements

The largest mosques are in Saigon (District 1) and Hanoi (Old Quarter). Many tour operators now build prayer breaks into their itineraries — ask before booking.

Day-by-day pacing

Vietnam is longer than most travellers expect. We recommend three regions per two-week trip rather than five — the country rewards depth.

Bring an open mind, modest layers for temple visits, and a healthy appetite for fresh herbs. Vietnam is going to surprise you.
