Halong Bay at Sunrise: Cruising the Karsts
Two nights aboard a wooden junk, kayaking through caves at first light and watching the bay wake up over breakfast.
There's a moment, around 5:50am in Halong Bay, when the limestone karsts catch the first light and the whole bay seems to exhale. We were on the upper deck of our junk in pyjamas, coffee in hand, watching it happen.
The cruise
Two-night cruises strike the right balance: enough time to slow down, but not so long that the boat starts to feel small. Our cabin had a private balcony, and the chef put on a halal-friendly menu featuring grilled grouper and Vietnamese-style chicken curry.
Kayaking Luon Cave
The lagoon inside Luon Cave is best experienced before the day-tripper boats arrive. We paddled in around 7:30am with three other kayaks, and the silence inside the karst hollow was almost theatrical.
What to pack
- Light layers — mornings are cool, afternoons are warm
- Reef-safe sunscreen for the kayaking sections
- A dry bag for your phone
Halong is busy in places, but if you choose your operator and your hours carefully, the bay still rewards quiet travellers handsomely.
